More business owners than ever are looking at a number attached to their website. It might come from Google PageSpeed Insights, a Lighthouse report a developer sent over, an agency's audit deck, or a free tool that emailed a score after a form submission. The number is usually somewhere between 40 and 80, it's usually lower than expected, and it usually arrives with no clear sense of whether it matters or what to do about it.

A website health score is a single 0–100 rating that combines how fast, secure, crawlable, mobile-friendly and search-visible a website is. It exists because the things that determine whether a website actually generates enquiries are spread across half a dozen technical areas that most owners never see. The score rolls them into one figure you can track over time — and, more usefully, it points at which area is dragging the rest down.

What a website health score actually measures

There's no single official standard, so the exact weighting varies between tools. But a credible health score is built from roughly the same components:

  • Performance and Core Web Vitals: how quickly the page becomes visible and interactive on a mid-range phone, measured through Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint and Cumulative Layout Shift.
  • Technical health: whether search engines can crawl the site cleanly — no broken links, no redirect chains, a valid XML sitemap, correct canonical tags, no accidental 'noindex' left on live pages.
  • On-page SEO: unique title tags and meta descriptions, one clear H1 per page, a sensible heading structure, descriptive image alt text, and internal links that connect related pages.
  • Mobile experience: readable text without zooming, tap targets that aren't cramped, no horizontal scrolling, and a layout that doesn't jump around as it loads.
  • Security: HTTPS enforced everywhere, a current SSL certificate, sensible security headers, and — for CMS sites — a core and plugin stack that isn't months behind on patches.
  • AI-search readiness (GEO): structured data, question-style headings, and clear factual summaries that let answer engines like Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity quote the page accurately.

A score in the 90s usually means all of these are in good shape. A score in the 50s rarely means everything is slightly wrong — it usually means one or two areas are badly wrong and pulling the average down hard.

Why your score drops even when you haven't touched the site

The most common reaction to a low score is 'but we haven't changed anything'. That's exactly the problem. A website sits on a stack of moving parts, and standing still means falling behind:

  • The bar keeps rising. Google added Interaction to Next Paint as a Core Web Vitals metric in 2024, replacing First Input Delay with a stricter measure. Sites that passed before can quietly start failing without a single line of their own code changing.
  • Third-party scripts accumulate. Every analytics tag, chat widget, pixel and embed added over the years runs on every page load. Five of them barely register; fifteen add seconds.
  • Content and images bloat. Uncompressed photos uploaded straight from a phone, a media library that's grown for years, a database that's never been cleaned — all of it slows delivery.
  • Links rot. External sites move or shut down, internal pages get renamed, and broken links pile up where nobody is checking.
  • Competitors improve. Search rankings are relative. If three competitors invested in speed and structured data this year and you didn't, your effective position drops even though your own site is unchanged.

What a low score actually costs an Indian business

The cost is rarely a single dramatic event. It's a slow leak. On mobile — where most Indian traffic arrives, often on patchy connections — a large share of visitors abandon a page that takes more than about three seconds to load, so a slow site loses people before they ever see the offer. Weak technical health and thin on-page SEO cause rankings to slip position by position over months, which looks like a gradual decline in enquiries rather than an obvious drop. Missing structured data means AI Overviews and answer engines summarise a competitor instead of you. And a visible SSL warning or broken page tells a prospective customer that the business may not be run carefully anywhere else either.

How to check your website's score

The fixes that move the score most

Work in order of impact. Chasing a 3-point gain while ignoring a 25-point one is the most common way audits waste time.

1. Fix the biggest performance offender first

For most sites it's images: compress them, serve modern formats like WebP, and size them for how they're actually displayed. After that it's render-blocking JavaScript — defer or remove scripts that don't need to run before the page paints. If the site is still slow after both, the problem is usually hosting, and no amount of front-end tuning will fully fix cheap shared hosting under load.

2. Clear the technical debt

Find and fix broken internal and external links. Collapse redirect chains so one hop gets to the final URL. Make sure every important page has a correct self-referencing canonical tag, the XML sitemap lists only live, indexable URLs, and no live page is accidentally set to 'noindex'.

3. Get the on-page basics right

Every page needs a unique, descriptive title tag and meta description, exactly one H1, and a logical heading order. Add alt text to images that carries meaning, not keyword lists. Link related pages to each other so both visitors and crawlers can move through the site.

4. Lock down security

Force HTTPS on every URL and redirect all HTTP traffic to it. Add basic security headers. If the site runs on WordPress or another CMS, get the core, theme and plugins onto a current, supported version and keep them there — outdated plugins are the single most common cause of site compromise, and a hacked site can lose its Google visibility within days.

5. Make the site legible to AI answer engines

Add structured data for your organisation, articles and FAQs. Use headings that phrase the actual questions people ask, and answer them in the first sentence or two underneath. Keep key facts — what you do, where, for whom, at what price range — stated plainly in text rather than buried in an image or a PDF. This is the groundwork for being cited by AI answer engines instead of skipped, and it overlaps heavily with good SEO.

When to fix it yourself, and when to get help

Do it yourself when the wins are contained and low-risk: compressing images, updating plugins on a staging copy first, fixing obvious broken links, writing better title tags. These move the score and they're hard to get badly wrong.

Get help when the score won't move despite genuine effort, when the bottleneck is architectural — hosting, a bloated theme, a rendering approach that fights performance — or when the site earns real search traffic and you can't afford to guess.
